In this blog article, we wanted to assist you with getting around in Cville and on-grounds. Attending a university often involves a lot of walking to class or dining halls. To make it easier for students, UVA and Charlottesville provides a lot of transportation opportunities in order to get you where you need to go.
Traveling On-Grounds: There are University buses that run often to get you to where you need to be. There are two main bus lines that will be running this summer to take you anywhere around grounds: Northline (NL) and University Loop (UL). The buses run from 7:30am to 12:30am in either 20min or 30min intervals.
The buses do not run on the weekend during the summer months because it is on the summer route schedule. Once the school year begins, the bus service will resume its normal schedule and will run on the weekends and serve late-night.
Traveling Off-Grounds:
Honestly, first years are not allowed to bring cars to grounds. However, as Dean Luedtke suggested, you can bring a car to the summer program but you must contact the Parking & Transportation [
phone: (434) 924-7231 or email parking@virginia.edu]. If you do not plan on bringing a car to grounds, that is fine, you can still get around!
Charlottesville Area Transit Service (CAT)
It's free for students to ride the CAT buses, as long as you show the driver your student I.D. There is an app for Andriod and iPhones as well as a phone number that you can call to check when a bus arrives at a particular stop. The app and number works to tell you bus arrivals for both the University Buses and the CAT. The app is "Wahoo Bus", which is free to download. The number is 434-244-5180 (save it in your phone!).
The #7 Bus is the main CAT Bus that students take. You'll take this bus to go to the Fashion Square Mall. You can either wait for the bus at the CAT bus stop near the Rotunda, or you can take the Northline to Barracks Road Shopping Center, and catch the bus from there. Click Here for the #7 Bus Schedule
The #5 Bus is another bus that is used among students because it goes down route29 to Wal-mart. In order to catch this bus, you will have to take the Northline or #7 bus to Barracks Road Shopping Center then transfer onto the #5.
The FREE Trolley is what you'll take to go to the Downtown Mall you can catch the trolley all around grounds. Click Here for the Free Trolley Schedule
ZipCar
If you prefer to drive rather than take a bus, but did not bring a car, you are in luck. You can rent a zipcar to get you where you need to go! There are several Zipcars located around grounds for your convenience. In order to rent the Zipcar, you have to register online at www.zipcar.com/uva. The registration fee is $25 and the rates to use the car are $8/hour on weekdays and $9/hour on weekends. There are also rates to use it for a full day or two.
If you join it you could get free driving credit! Link to Zipcar
(amber: I used Zipcar at the end of my first year and really liked it because you can drive out to Target, unfortunately the CAT buses do not provide service to Target.)
Bike
Many students and Charlottesville members bike throughout the community. UVA provides bike racks around grounds as well as a maintenance stations. You can bring a bike to grounds, but you must provide your own lock (a U-lock is suggested). The transportation office recommends that you register your bike with the police department in case of an unfortunate event. The University Buses and CAT buses have bike racks at the front of the bus. Therefore, if you ever want to bike somewhere but need to bus is for awhile, you can!
Taxi & Safe Ride
When the buses stop running late in the night, the best means of transportation is either calling the Yellow Cab taxi service or Safe Ride. The Yellow Cab is very reliable and mostly used by students. If you forget to bring money while you are out on the town, you can call a Yellow Cab and request the tab be charged to your student account on SIS. If you prefer not to take a cab, you can always use Safe Ride which is a late night transportation service provided by the Police Department. As long as you have your student id, the Safe Ride Van, driven by a police officer, will give you a ride from wherever you are, no matter what condition you are in.
